sorry to hear the pump is not working as expected.
You're right, it can dispense too much unless light pressure is applied (see description) which I accept is not obvious or easy. Ideally the pump is more suited to decanting.
You might try winding elastic bands around the neck to limit the plunging force. I hope this helps.
